I really didn't know where to put this, but I ran across it on the Huffington Post and wanted to share it. I think it's funny.
"If you're using the word "google" as a verb, in place of "search the internet," watch out -- Google's lawyers are onto you, and they want you to stop. The
internet search giant is apparently concerned about diluting their precious brand, released this statement to several media outlets this week:
We think it's important to make the distinction between using the word Google to describe using Google to search the internet, and using the word Google
to describe searching the internet. It has some serious trademark issues.
Okay there is definitely a word for whoever said that."
If you don't believe me, just google it.
I think it's fair enough. They're not actually pursuing lawsutes or asking that we don't use the word colloquially, just sending requests to the companies and businesses who have used Google incorrectly on their websites or in official discourse. The thing is, that in order to register the name as a Trademark they have to show evidence of attempting to restrict it's use. They don't have to succeed, just prove they tried. Otherwise, the word Google will go the way of Cleenex, Xerox, Hoover, etc.
Lol, this. was. entertaining.
I would think they'd be proud, and accept the free advertising. Corporations, weird bunch.
